Fluorocarbon Leader

View as

Love going fishing but just can't seem to hook anything. It's time to check your leader line! There are significant differences in which leader lines are best for catching which fish species, from materials to thickness. "Leader" refers to a length of line or wire connecting your main line and hook or lure to deliver protection against structure, fish teeth or any other obstacle that may damage your line. Leaders offer greater protection and give you the option to run thinner main lines or braided lines so you can hold more line length on your spool and significantly improve casting distance. Fish can be extremely picky and timid, so one of the best ways to sneak up on them with an enticing bait or fishing lure, is to make the line difficult for the fish to see.

Frequently Asked Questions

A leader is a specific type of fishing line that connects your main line to the lure or bait. Fluorocarbon leader refers to a high-performance fishing line made from polyvinylidene fluoride. It is denser than water, allowing it to sink faster than other lines, and has a refractive index similar to water, making it nearly invisible to fish. Made from fluorocarbon material, it offers several advantages, including near invisibility underwater and high resistance to abrasions. These qualities make fluorocarbon the best leader line when you need both stealth and toughness during your fishing trips.

Fluorocarbon leader line is clear, abrasion-resistant, and is heavier than water. The line is stiff and does not stretch as much as traditional monofilament. When fishing with braid and fluorocarbon leaders, there will be a little stretch in the line. This can be good to get a quick hookset but does not absorb quick movements from strong fish. For this reason, reels with quality drag and somewhat flexible rods should be used when fishing with braid and fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon covers a broad family of compounds, including organics comprised of fluorine, chlorine and carbon, along with synthetics made from hydrocarbons—and has been used in everything from Teflon to Freon. In the fishing world, it's associated with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). It's extruded in a single strand similar to nylon monofilament. However because fluorocarbon's molecules are more tightly packed, the line is denser and noticeably heavier by size. It also differs from mono in visibility, stretch and durability—all of which affect how it performs in the water.

The FG knot is the most common and reliable knot that has proven to be stronger and thinner than all other braid-to-leader knots we’ve tested. It also happens to be much thinner than all of the other braid-to-leader knots because the thicker leader line never doubles over as it does for traditional fishing knots. The absolute best and fastest way to tie the FG knot is to thread the leader onto the braid while the braid is under tension. Otherwise, tying a fluoro leader to a monofilament or braided line, you’ll need a strong knot like the Double Uni or Albright Knot. Start by overlapping the ends of both lines, tying an overhand knot on each side for the Double Uni, or make a loop in the fluorocarbon line and pass the other line through for the Albright Knot. These knots ensure a secure connection between your lines.

In most cases, the length of your fishing leader should be between 60 to 75cm (25 - 30 inches) . Your leader length can be shorter or longer than this, depending on your fishing style, target species, main fishing line, weather, and surrounding underwater features. Having your leader over 60cm allows you to be able to snap off any abrasion on the line close to the lure or hook without making much of a difference in length and having to retie your braid/ mono to the leader knot.
