Eight-strand braid is woven from eight individual fibres rather than four, and that construction difference is what defines it, not stretch, and not UV resistance. Braid of any strand count is a fundamentally different material to monofilament or fluorocarbon: it doesn't stretch under load the way nylon mono does, and that has nothing to do with how many fibres it's woven from. What strand count actually changes is the profile and feel of the braid itself, and that's worth understanding before you pick a breaking strain.

What Eight-Strand Construction Actually Changes
Compared to four-strand braid's flatter, rougher profile, eight-strand construction gives a rounder, smoother line. That affects how it casts and how quietly it runs through your rod's guides, and it generally lets you run a thinner line for the same rated breaking strain, particularly at lighter line classes. It doesn't change how much load the line can take before it lets go: breaking strength at a given rating is about the rating, not the strand count. Four-strand still earns its place fishing structure that will chew through line regardless of technique, rock ledges, oyster-encrusted pylons, timber, since its thicker individual strands tend to hold up better against raw abrasion.
What We Stock: Austackle Krypto 8 Ultrabraid
We currently stock one eight-strand range, Austackle's Krypto 8 Ultrabraid, a European-made line built around a genuine 8-strand PE construction. Austackle's own specification describes a round body profile giving a smooth, soft and pliable texture even at the heavier end of the range, along with UV stabilising treatment, added abrasion resistance and strong knot strength. It's available in 20lb, 30lb and 50lb, all on 150-yard spools. We don't carry a broader multi-brand eight-strand range at this time, so what's in the current listing is the range available rather than a subset of a larger catalogue.
Matching 20lb, 30lb and 50lb to the Fishing You're Doing
20lb suits light-to-medium estuary and inshore threadline work, bream, whiting and flathead on light gear where casting distance and a quiet line through the guides matter. 30lb is the general estuary and bay step-up, covering tailor, mulloway and snapper around moderate structure. 50lb is built for genuinely heavier work: dragging a solid snapper, jewfish or kingfish away from structure, where the priority shifts from finesse to simply winning the fight. Whichever rating you choose, braid is normally run to a fluorocarbon leader rather than tied direct to the lure.
If You Need Something Lighter
The Krypto 8 Ultrabraid range starts at 20lb, so it isn't the line to reach for on true finesse bream or whiting outfits running under that. For lighter breaking strains, our Microline range covers 4lb through to 15lb in verified diameters as fine as 0.04mm, built for exactly that end of the scale.
The Most Common Mistake
The mistake we see most often with braid selection has nothing to do with brand and everything to do with matching breaking strain to the reel and the fishing you're actually doing. Anglers will spool a light estuary reel with 50lb braid "for safety," reasoning that more breaking strain can only help. In practice this cuts real casting distance, since the reel can't hold or release a thick line as efficiently as a fine one, and it eats into usable line capacity on a spool that wasn't sized for that diameter. The reverse mistake happens too: running 20lb on gear meant to drag fish out of heavy structure, where the finesse advantage doesn't matter and the extra strength of 30lb or 50lb genuinely does. Line class should be chosen to suit the target species and the structure you're fishing, not defaulted to whichever spool happens to be on the shelf.
Frequently Asked Questions
The number of fibres woven together. Eight-strand gives a rounder, smoother profile that generally runs thinner at the same rated breaking strain and casts more quietly through the guides, while four-strand's flatter, thicker strands tend to hold up better against raw abrasion on rock, oyster shell or timber.
Not meaningfully. All braid has far less stretch than monofilament, minimal rather than none, and that holds whether it's four-strand or eight-strand. Strand count changes profile and feel, not stretch.
20lb, 30lb and 50lb, all on 150-yard spools. It's a European-made line with a UV-stabilising treatment, added abrasion resistance and a round profile designed to stay soft and pliable even at the heavier ratings.
Our Microline range covers 4lb through to 15lb, with verified diameters down to 0.04mm, and suits true finesse bream and whiting work better than the Krypto 8 Ultrabraid range does.
Not inherently, that's not a property strand count adds. The Krypto 8 Ultrabraid we stock does carry its own UV-stabilising treatment as a feature of that specific line, rather than something all eight-strand braid has by default.
Matching breaking strain to habit rather than to the reel and the fishing at hand. Overloading a light estuary reel with heavy braid cuts casting distance and usable capacity, while underloading gear meant for structure work with too-light braid gives up strength you'll actually need.
