Shade Sails

View as

Australian sun is hard on people long before it's hard on gear, and a lot of the time anglers and boat owners spend outdoors, at the ramp waiting on a tide, in the driveway prepping the trailer, at a caravan site between trips, or on the sand for a beach session, has no shade built in at all. This range covers four genuinely different products for that gap: raw shade cloth by the roll, ready-to-rig shade sails, caravan privacy screens, and a portable beach tent, and picking the right one comes down to whether you're screening an area, shading a fixed spot, or just need something you can pack up and take with you.

Shade Cloth by the Roll vs a Ready-Rigged Sail

The lightest product in this range is plain shade cloth sold by the roll, a mono-tape knitted, UV-stabilised HDPE fabric at around 100g/m², running 1.83m wide in 10m or 20m lengths, blocking 30% or 50% of sun depending on the roll. It's raw material rather than a finished product, meant to be cut and fixed to your own fence line, framework or structure, which makes it the right call for screening a run of yard, a carport side or a work area rather than rigging an overhead sail. The pre-made shade sails are a different product entirely: cut to a fixed shape (square, rectangle or triangle), hemmed and reinforced at every corner, and built to be tensioned between fixed points as a standalone overhead canopy. If you're covering a defined area like a boat parked in the driveway or a section of deck, the ready-made sail is the one built for that job. If you're screening a boundary or a fence line, the roll is both cheaper and the more practical material for it.

Breathable Shade vs a Genuinely Waterproof Cover

Not every shade sail in this range does the same job, and it's a listing-by-listing distinction rather than a brand one, so check the specific product rather than assuming. Instahut's standard sails run 280g/m² commercial-grade, knitted polyethylene fabric, blocking up to 98% of UV and further treated with a UV-resistant additive to extend that protection over time. The knitted construction is deliberately breathable, air moves through it rather than pooling underneath, which keeps the shaded area cooler, but it isn't a rain barrier. Instahut also sells a dedicated waterproof line, a 220g/m² polyester weave, still blocking up to 98% of UV, that sheds rain rather than letting it through, and Wallaroo's waterproof range does the same job at 160gsm, blocking up to 95% of UV with UV-stabilised double stitching and mildew and mould resistance built into the fabric itself. Every sail in this range uses stainless steel hardware at the corners, buckles and webbing on the Instahut lines, D-rings on the Wallaroo waterproof range, so the tensioning point isn't where any of them give out first. The word "waterproof" in the product name is the reliable signal either way: if it's not there, treat the sail as a breathable sun shade rather than rain protection.

Sizing: From a Courtyard Corner to a Full Driveway Bay

Sizes in this range run from a 2 x 2.5m corner sail right up to Wallaroo's largest fixed shapes, an 8 x 8m triangle and an 8 x 6m rectangle, big enough to cover a full driveway bay with a boat and trailer parked under it, not just a courtyard table. Between those extremes sit the sizes most home installs actually use, square and rectangular sails from around 3 x 3m through to 5 x 5m, which suit a deck, a pergola gap or a single carport bay. The installation guidance given on these sails is to rig them at a minimum 25 degree fall from the highest fixing point, since a sail installed too flat pools water in the middle rather than shedding it, and no mounting posts or poles are supplied with any of them, so the fixing points, whether that's an existing structure, posts you install, or a wall, need sorting before you buy based on the size you need.

Caravan Privacy Screens

The caravan privacy screens in this range solve a different problem again: they're not freestanding, they strap directly to a caravan's roll-out awning arm and peg out to the ground with the supplied guy ropes, working as an end wall or side wall for the awning rather than a standalone sail. They're made from water-repellent polyethylene with hemmed edges and stainless steel D-ring attachments, and they're reversible, so the same screen works on either side of the awning. Setting the screen at a wider angle opens up more usable space underneath, and pairing two screens gives a fully enclosed setup for anglers touring with a caravan and wanting real privacy at a powered site rather than an open awning. For anyone wanting broader camping and touring gear beyond shade and privacy, our Camping range covers the rest of the setup.

Beach Tent Canopy

For a beach fishing session rather than a fixed install, the Wallaroo beach tent is a portable, pop-up style shelter rated UPF 50+, set up by laying it flat, fitting the poles, filling the corner sand pockets and staking it down. It packs away for the next session rather than staying rigged in one spot, which makes it a genuinely different product to the fixed sails above, built for anglers who want shade wherever the sand takes them rather than shade over one permanent spot.

The Most Common Mistake

The most common mistake in this category is assuming every product here does the same job as every other one. A breathable 98% UV sail bought expecting it to also keep rain off will leave you wet the first time it storms, and a waterproof canopy rigged flat instead of at the minimum 25 degree fall will pool water in the centre rather than shedding it, which stresses the fabric and the stitching over time. If you're covering a boat itself rather than the space around it, that's a separate job again, worth checking against our Boat Covers range, and if what you actually need is a fully waterproof groundsheet or an angled tarp rather than an overhead sail, our Tarps range covers that instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

The roll is raw fabric, cut and fixed to your own fence, frame or structure, and it's the right choice for screening a boundary or a run of yard. A pre-made sail is a finished shape with reinforced, hemmed corners built to be tensioned between fixed points as a standalone overhead canopy.

Not all of them, and it's a listing-by-listing check rather than a brand one. Instahut's standard 280g/m² range is a breathable, knitted fabric built to block UV and let air move through, not to shed rain. Both Instahut and Wallaroo also sell dedicated waterproof lines, at 220gsm and 160gsm respectively, built to block UV and shed rain. If the listing says "waterproof" in the name, it does both jobs. If it doesn't, treat it as sun shade only.

For a single boat bay, a square or rectangular sail from around 4 x 4m up to 5 x 5m usually covers it, depending on the trailer's length and how much clearance you want at the edges. For a full driveway bay or a larger boat, Wallaroo's largest sizes run up to an 8 x 8m triangle or an 8 x 6m rectangle.

No. None of the shade sails or the caravan privacy screens include mounting posts or poles, so you'll need existing fixing points, whether that's a wall, a fence line, an awning arm, or posts you install yourself, sized to suit the sail you're buying.

A minimum 25 degree fall from the highest corner is the installation guidance given on these sails. Rigged flatter than that, a sail will pool rainwater in the centre rather than shedding it, which puts unnecessary strain on the fabric and stitching over time.

It straps to your caravan's roll-out awning arm and pegs to the ground, working as an end or side wall for the awning rather than a standalone sail. It's built for privacy and wind protection at a caravan site, and two screens paired together give a fully enclosed setup.

No. It's a portable, pop-up UPF 50+ shelter set up with poles and corner sand pockets, built to be packed up and moved between beach sessions rather than rigged permanently in one spot like the fixed shade sails above.
