Boat Anchor Winches

View as

Hauling an anchor and chain up by hand off the bow, in a chop, while trying to hold position over a reef mark, gets old fast. An electric anchor winch takes the physical grind out of anchoring, and it is one of the more spec-heavy upgrades you can make to a boat, because the winch, the rope and chain, the wiring and the mounting all need to work together. This collection features Viper electric drum winches from Bell Marine, from the 1000W Rapid and S Series models through to the 1500W and 2500W Pro Series II winches, sold as bundles with rope and chain, along with fitment kits and chain socks. Getting the match right is mostly a matter of knowing how deep you anchor, how heavy your ground tackle is and what your electrical system can supply.

Drum Winches and How They Work

Every winch in this collection is a drum design, where the rope and a short length of chain wind onto a spool. A drum winch is a compact, self-contained unit, and it suits boats that want a tidy installation with the rope stored on the winch itself. The Rapid models retrieve at 45 metres per minute and a fall rate of over 50 metres per minute, and the Pro Series II 1500 and 2500 list a fall rate of 55 metres per minute. The Viper S Series 1000 Gravity Feed Free Fall is described as using a mechanical free fall system that drops the anchor quickly under gravity. Each listing is worth reading for the specific features, because the models differ in construction, gearbox and how the anchor is deployed.

Choosing the Right Winch

Start with the boat and the ground tackle. The 1000W models are the entry point to the range, while the Pro Series II 1500 and 2500 are described as designed for larger vessel installations of around 8 metres or more, with the 1500 listed as able to lift an anchor of 37lb and above. As a general guide, choose a winch with some margin over the weight of the anchor, chain and rope you plan to lift, because a winch working constantly near its limit tends to run hotter and wear faster. If you are between sizes, it is usually better to go one step up than one step down.

Rope and Chain Length

Our bundles come in a range of lengths, from 75m of rope with 8m of chain (83m total) and 90m of rope with 8m of chain (98m total) on the Rapid and gravity feed models, up to the Pro Series II 1500 and 2500 bundles, which carry up to 200m of 6mm double braid rope spliced to 10m of 8mm galvanised short link chain. The right length depends on the deepest water you regularly anchor in, not the average, and on how much scope you want to let out. A common rule of thumb is to let out several times the depth in rope and chain, with more scope in wind, current or rough conditions and less in calm, sheltered water, but check what suits your boat and anchor. Buy for the deepest anchorage on your usual trips, and keep a little spare.

Power, Wiring and Battery

Most of the range is 12 volt, with the 2500W Pro Series II listed as a 24V winch, so check the voltage against your boat’s electrical system before you buy. Winches draw a lot of current under load, so the battery, cable and protection need to be sized to the winch rather than to whatever is already on the boat. A heavy-duty marine-grade cable run, kept as short and as thick as practical, helps avoid voltage drop, and a correctly rated fuse or circuit breaker close to the battery protects the circuit. A winch that has slowed down over time on a long cable run is a common sign that the wiring needs attention. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for cable size and protection for your model.

Fitting and Mounting

Viper winches come ready to install apart from the battery cabling, with factory-fitted cables sealed to IP68. Mounting matters as much as the winch itself. On aluminium boats, mixing stainless steel hardware and aluminium in salt water can cause galvanic corrosion, which is why Viper offers aluminium boat fitment kits matched to the S Series and Pro Series II drum winches. Fit the winch where the rope runs freely to the bow roller, and use a chain sock to keep the chain tidy and protect the deck. Our boat anchors and wider boat accessories range cover the other parts of a good ground tackle setup.

Matching a Winch to Your Boat

Whether you run a trailer boat, a centre console or a larger offshore boat, think through how you actually use it. A boat that anchors in a few metres of estuary water has very different needs from one that sits over deep reef. If your boat is on the smaller side, the 1000W Rapid and S Series models are the natural fit, while larger boats anchoring in deep water suit the Pro Series II models and their longer rope capacity. Viper backs the winches in this range with a 5-year warranty, which is worth checking when you compare models.

The Most Common Mistake

The mistake we see most often is choosing a winch on boat length alone, without checking the weight of the anchor, chain and rope it will be lifting. This is especially common when someone upgrades to a heavier anchor or longer chain for deeper water. A winch that is working at the top of its capacity every time it is used will run hotter and wear faster, and the problem usually shows up later as a slow or failing motor rather than an immediate fault. A close second is skimping on the wiring, since an undersized or overly long cable is one of the most common reasons a winch loses power.

Frequently Asked Questions

Match the winch to the weight of your anchor, chain and rope, the depth you anchor in and the electrical system on your boat. Our Viper range starts at 1000W and runs up to 2500W, so there is a choice for smaller and larger boats.

A drum winch winds the rope, and a short length of chain, onto a spool. All of the winches in this collection are drum winches.

It depends on the deepest water you anchor in and the scope you need. Our bundles range from about 83m total on the 75m rope Rapid bundle up to 200m of rope with 10m of chain on the Pro Series II models.

Choose the voltage that matches your boat’s electrical system. Most of the range is 12V, and the 2500W Pro Series II is a 24V winch.

It depends on the winch and the length of the cable run, so follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your model. As a rule, use marine-grade cable, keep the run as short as practical and fit a correctly rated fuse or circuit breaker near the battery.

Yes. Viper offers aluminium boat fitment kits for its S Series and Pro Series II drum winches, designed to deal with the issue of mixing stainless steel and aluminium in salt water.

Most of the bundles in this collection include pre-spliced rope, short link chain and a swivel, and you add the cable to connect to the battery. Check each listing for exactly what is included.

The Viper listings state a 5-year performance warranty. Check the product page for the full terms.
