Black or White? Reading the Water with Kaiju Bait's Monsoon Spinner

Black or White? Reading the Water with Kaiju Bait's Monsoon Spinner

LION Digital |

There's an old idea, the same one behind yin and yang, that opposites don't clash so much as complete each other. Light needs dark to mean anything, calm needs a storm to prove it. It's a handy way to think about a spinnerbait rotation too, and it's exactly why we got a kick out of seeing Kaiju Baits' Monsoon Spinner land on our shelves in both Black and White.

We've had a few of the crew running both up at Lake Borumba over the past few weeks, working the lie-down bushes for bass and saratoga, and it's turned into a bit of a running debate in the shop: which one earns the cast first?

Two Sides of One Bait

Whichever side of that debate you land on, the bait underneath doesn't change. Every Monsoon Spinner is handcrafted around a stainless steel wire frame with hand-tied skirts, a low centre of gravity for cleaner tracking through the water column, and BKK high-carbon steel double assist hooks built to turn a follow into a hook-up. The adjustable spinner blades are tuned for flash and vibration that Bass, Murray Cod, and Saratoga struggle to ignore.

Colour is really the only thing separating the two, but on the water, that's rarely a small thing.

Why Colour Still Matters

Black works as a shadow. In stained or muddy water, low light, or that overcast stretch before a front moves through, a black spinnerbait throws a hard, unmistakable silhouette: something a predator can find even when the water's working against it.

White works more like a mirror. Under bright sun or in clearer water, it reflects and flashes like baitfish scattering, reading as a natural feed rather than something foreign in the water.

Neither one is the right answer on its own. They're built to take turns depending on what conditions hand you that day.

A Rough Read on Conditions

If you're chasing that first cast decision, the water usually tells you more than the forecast does. Murky run-off, low light, or fishing tight to shadow lines under structure tends to favour Black. Clear water and harsh midday sun tend to favour White. Most days sit somewhere in between, which is really the whole argument for keeping both tied on and ready to swap.

In Stock Now

Kaiju Baits' Monsoon Spinner is in stock at Fishing Superstore in both colourways. As for that debate in the shop, the honest answer is nobody's willing to leave either one at home anymore. Black or white? Where do you land?
