Comprehensive Pre-Start Checklist to Get Your Boat Ready for Spring

Comprehensive Pre-Start Checklist to Get Your Boat Ready for Spring

LION Digital |

As the warmer weather rolls in and fishing season kicks into high gear, it’s time to dust off the boat and get her ready for action. A little preparation now can save you a lot of headaches (and potential safety risks) once you’re out on the water.

Here’s a comprehensive pre-start checklist covering the essentials – from the engine and electronics to safety gear and trailers – so you can hit the water this spring with confidence.

Mechanical & Engine

Your boat’s engine is the heart of every trip, so keeping it in top shape is priority one.

  • Inspect and replace engine oil and filters.
  • Flush and check the cooling system; top up coolant levels.
  • Look over the fuel system for leaks or cracked hoses; replace filters.
  • Inspect belts, hoses, and clamps for wear.
  • Replace spark plugs if they’re due.
  • Grease all fittings and moving parts.
  • Charge and test the battery; clean the terminals.
  • Check transmission or drive oil and replace if needed.
  • Hook up a hose and give the motor a run-up. It is always better to discover an issue at home rather than at the boat ramp.

Pro tip: Don’t wait until you’re at the ramp to discover a flat battery. Test at home and keep a spare if possible.

Electrical & Electronics

Modern boats rely heavily on electronics, especially for navigation and safety.

  • Test all navigation and interior lights.
  • Confirm bilge pumps and float switches work properly.
  • Test horn, VHF radio, GPS, fishfinder, radar, and any other electronics.
  • Inspect wiring for corrosion or loose connections.

Tip: Saltwater can wreak havoc on connections. Apply dielectric grease or soft seal where possible to help prevent corrosion.

Fuel & Propulsion

The fuel system and propeller keep you moving, so don’t overlook them.

  • Top up with fresh fuel; use a stabiliser if old fuel has been sitting.
  • Inspect the propeller for dings, cracks, or distortion.
  • Tighten the propeller nut and fit a new split pin.
  • Inspect the outdrive or lower unit for fishing line or other damage.

Safety Gear

Safety gear can make the difference in an emergency, so treat it as non-negotiable.

  • Check all life jackets are the right size and free from damage.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are fully charged and easy to access.
  • Inspect flares, EPIRB, and signalling devices; replace if expired.
  • Restock your first aid kit with fresh supplies.

Hull, Deck & Interior

A well-maintained hull and deck not only protect your boat but also make your time onboard more enjoyable.

  • Inspect the hull for cracks, blisters, or damage.
  • Clean and wax topsides and deck with Boat Cleaning & Protection products.
  • Check through-hulls, seacocks, and strainers for blockages.
  • Verify the condition of your anchor, chain, and rode.
  • Look over dock lines and fenders.
  • Clean the bilge and check for oil or fuel leaks.
  • Consider investing in a boat cover to protect your vessel between trips.
  • Store gear securely in dry bags and keep refreshments cold in coolers & eskys.

Trailer

If you trailer your boat, don’t forget this crucial part of the setup.

  • Check tyres for cracks, wear, and proper inflation.
  • Grease wheel bearings.
  • Test trailer lights and wiring.
  • Inspect the winch and straps plus safety chains.
  • Test trailer brakes (if fitted).

Tip: A failed bearing on the way to the ramp can ruin your weekend. Always carry a spare and the gear to replace it.

Final Step: Test Run

Once you’ve ticked everything off, do a short dockside engine run before your first trip. This ensures everything is running smoothly and gives you time to troubleshoot before heading out.

Spring is the season to shake off the cobwebs and make the most of Australia’s incredible boating and fishing opportunities. With this pre-start checklist, you’ll not only keep your boat in prime condition but also enjoy peace of mind knowing you’re safe and ready for the adventures ahead.
