I Didn’t Think I Needed a Gimbal Belt… Until That Day Offshore

I Didn’t Think I Needed a Gimbal Belt… Until That Day Offshore

LION Digital |

I used to think a gimbal belt was one of those bits of gear you eventually get around to.

Not urgent. Not essential. Just something you see other blokes wearing when they are properly targeting bigger fish.

That changed on a trip offshore.

We were sitting in a bit of light swell, nothing rough, just that slow rolling movement that makes everything feel easy until it is not. Rods out, everyone chatting, lines ticking over in holders.

Then one of them just loaded up.

No warning. No build-up. Just a heavy, solid pull and the rod bent over like it had been hooked into something serious.

The drag starts screaming and I remember thinking, not even excited at first, just, right, this is going to be a proper fish.

At First You Think You’ve Got It Covered

That’s the part that gets you.

At the start, everything feels fine. Adrenaline kicks in, you lean back, get your feet sorted, and you start working the fish like you’ve done it a hundred times before.

And for a while, it actually feels under control.

Then time drags on a bit.

The rod butt starts to dig in. First into my stomach, then into my hip as I shift around trying to find a better angle. The boat is moving, the fish is moving, and you start adjusting without really thinking about it.

At some point, it stops being about technique.

You are just aware of pressure.

Not even the fish so much anymore, just the way it is sitting in your body.

Then It Starts to Wear You Down

I remember leaning over the rail, salt and sweat on my face, trying to keep the rod in a decent position while this fish just stayed down deep and stubborn.

Every lift felt a bit heavier than the last, but it was not the fish changing, it was me slowly losing good position without noticing it.

You start bracing the rod against the same spot over and over again. At first you do not even realise it.

Then it starts to bite.

That dull pressure turns into proper discomfort, and suddenly you are not just fighting a fish anymore. You are trying to hold your body together long enough to finish the fight.

I remember thinking, this is where good fish get lost sometimes. Not because of tackle. Because people just run out of position.

The Part You Feel the Next Morning

We got it close enough to see colour in the end, but I was done by the time it was over.

And the next morning, you feel it properly.

Ribs sore. Hips tight. Lower back just stiff in that deep way that reminds you exactly what you did the day before.

I have had similar fights since then, not even bigger fish, just longer ones, and I started noticing the same thing every time.

If your body is not supported properly, that is usually what gives out first. Not the gear.

That Is When I Started Paying Attention

After that trip, I started watching what the more experienced anglers were using.

And you notice it quickly offshore. The guys who have done it for years are not just muscling fish in. They are set up properly so their body is not doing all the work.

Because once you are into tuna, kingfish, marlin, big reef fish, anything that holds deep and pulls properly, the fight is not just winding.

It is how long you can stay physically in a good position without falling apart.

Without support, all that load just goes straight into the same places:
stomach, hips, lower back, core.

It does not feel like much at the start.

Then it builds. And suddenly it is everything.

What Actually Changes With a Gimbal Belt

The first time I used one properly, nothing dramatic happened.

It just felt easier.

The rod butt was not digging into me anymore. It was sitting in something solid, so the pressure was being spread instead of hitting one sore point over and over again.

And the biggest change was not comfort, it was control.

You stop constantly adjusting your stance. You stop fighting your own body position. You just stay locked in and work the fish.

Everything becomes more natural. Less wasted effort. Less energy leaking away in the wrong places.

It Is Not Strength

I used to think the anglers landing big fish were just tougher.

After enough time on the water, you realise that is not really it.

It is efficiency.

Once the rod is properly supported, you are not burning yourself out just trying to hold position. You start using your legs and core properly instead of overloading your arms and back.

And that changes everything about how long you can stay in a fight.

Because most of it is not the fish pulling away.

It is you slowly losing the ability to stay in a good position.

I Do Not Fish Heavy Without One Now

After that trip, I picked up a carbon fibre gimbal belt.

Nothing overthought. Just something light that does not get in the way once you are moving around the boat.

The Carbon Fibre Viper Premium Gimbal Belt from Bell Marine, now available through Fishing Superstore, is what I ended up using.

The difference is simple.

I am not bruised after long fights.
I stay in position longer.
I do not fatigue as quickly.
And I am not wrecked the next day.

It does not make the fish easier.

It just means I can stay in the fight long enough to finish it properly.

Funny Thing About It

You do not really think about gear like this until you have one of those fights where your whole body is reminding you about it the next day.

After that, it is not really “extra gear” anymore.

It just becomes part of the setup without question.

And now, when I see someone leaning into a heavy fish without one, I already know what their next half hour is going to feel like.

Because I have been there.

And once you have done it both ways, you do not really choose the harder way again.
