I launched just before sunrise the other morning.
The ramp was quiet, the air still, and the water looked like glass. Perfect conditions.
As I idled out of the harbour, coffee in hand, I couldn’t help but think how different my boat is today compared to when I first started fishing decades ago.
Back then, the boat was pretty basic. Rods leaned wherever they fit. Bait got cut on the Esky lid. And pulling the anchor countless times through the day like a workout nobody asked for.
We still caught fish of course.
But over the years I slowly made small changes to the boat. Nothing flashy. Just practical upgrades that made life easier.
Looking back now, those little improvements have made a bigger difference than any new rod or reel ever did.
Here are a few upgrades that genuinely changed how enjoyable my days on the water became.
Rod Holders Where You Actually Need Them
One morning offshore a few years ago I was clearing my third tangled trolling line before 8am.
That was the day I realised the rod holders on my boat were completely wrong for the way I fish.
The factory fit holders were awkwardly positioned and I always felt like I was fighting myself getting lines set.
Once I repositioned mine properly, everything changed.
Running multiple lines while trolling became far easier. The spread stayed cleaner. When a rod buckled over, it was right where it needed to be.
Proper rod holders help you:
• run multiple lines cleanly
• keep rods secure when the swell picks up
• avoid rods sliding around the deck
• grab a rod quickly when a fish strikes
It’s one of the simplest upgrades you can make, but it instantly makes your boat feel more purpose-built for fishing.
A Proper Bait Board Makes the Whole Boat Work Better
Every angler remembers the days of cutting bait on the esky lid.
Pilchards sliding everywhere. Knives going missing. Hooks ending up exactly where you didn’t want them.
When I finally installed a proper bait board, the difference was immediate.
Suddenly there was a dedicated space to prepare bait, rig hooks and keep tools organised.
Everything became cleaner and safer.
When a fish comes alongside the boat, you’re not scrambling around trying to find gear. The deck stays clear and the whole boat feels more organised.
It’s one of those upgrades that doesn’t sound exciting, but once you have it you wouldn’t go back.
Running Outriggers Changed My Trolling Game
For years my trolling spread looked like spaghetti behind the boat.
One trip chasing tuna wide off the shelf we had three lines tangle before the sun was even properly up. Every time we reset the spread, another lure would drift too close to the prop wash.
That was the trip I decided to install outriggers.
The difference was immediate.
Outriggers spread the lines wider behind the boat, which keeps lures swimming naturally and well away from each other. I couldn’t believe how easy they were to install and how intuitive they were to use!
Suddenly the trolling spread looked clean and controlled.
They help you:
• reduce tangled lines
• create better lure presentation
• keep lines away from prop wash
• cover more water behind the boat
Modern removable outrigger systems have made them far easier to run on recreational boats.
The Bell Marine outriggers I grabbed from Fishing Superstore are designed specifically for practical offshore fishing boats, which makes this upgrade far more accessible than it used to be.
Once you run a clean spread with outriggers, you realise how much easier trolling can be.
The Upgrade I Wish I Installed Years Earlier
If I could go back and install one upgrade sooner, it would be an electric anchor winch.
For years we pulled anchor the old way.
Hand over hand, hauling rope and chain after a full day on the water. If the wind picked up or you were fishing deeper structure, it could be hard work.
Eventually I installed an electric anchor winch.
Now retrieving the anchor is simple. Push a button and the winch handles the heavy lifting.
It makes repositioning over reefs easier, resetting drifts quicker, and it saves a lot of effort at the end of a long day.
For anglers who fish regularly, it’s one of those upgrades that genuinely improves your time on the water.
Many experienced fishos say the same thing after installing one:
They wish they had done it sooner.
Marine Electrical Gear That Actually Survives Saltwater
If you’ve owned a boat long enough, you learn one thing quickly.
Saltwater gets into everything.
Cheap switches and wiring don’t last long in that environment.
Over time I replaced a lot of my boat’s electrical components with proper marine-rated hardware designed to handle harsh conditions.
Better switches. Better connectors. Better wiring.
It might not be the most exciting upgrade on the boat, but reliable electrics mean pumps, lights and accessories work when you need them.
And when you’re offshore, that reliability matters.
The Biggest Difference Is Organisation
The biggest change I notice now isn’t just individual upgrades.
It’s how organised the boat feels.
Everything has a place.
Rods sit where they should. Tools are easy to reach. The deck stays clear when a fish hits.
Instead of wasting time untangling gear or moving equipment around, the focus stays where it should be.
Fishing.
That’s what these small upgrades really do. They remove the little frustrations that used to interrupt the day.
Small Boat Upgrades Add Up Over Time
Most anglers don’t rebuild their boat overnight.
It usually happens slowly.
A rod holder upgrade one season.
A bait board the next.
Maybe outriggers after a few frustrating trolling runs.
Before long those small changes add up, and the boat becomes perfectly suited to the way you fish.
That’s when the whole day on the water becomes easier.
More fishing.
Less frustration.
Thinking About Improving Your Boat Setup?
If you’ve been considering improving your boat setup this season, it’s worth looking at some of the modern marine accessories now available for recreational anglers.
Fishing Superstore has recently introduced a range of Bell Marine boating accessory bundles designed specifically for practical fishing boats.
Instead of sourcing individual parts, the bundles combine popular upgrades like rod holders, bait boards, trolling accessories and marine hardware into ready-to-go packages.
For anglers looking to tidy up their boat setup or make a few practical improvements, they’re an easy way to upgrade without overcomplicating things.

Because the Best Fishing Days Should Be Simple
At the end of the day, fishing isn’t about the newest boat or the flashiest gear.
It’s about the moments that keep bringing us back.
Early morning launches.
Quiet drifts over reef.
That sudden sound of a reel screaming when a fish hits the lure.
And often, it’s the small upgrades to your boat that make those moments even better.
A boat that works with you.
Less hassle.
More time fishing.
Exactly how a good day on the water should be.
