Tie One On: How to Fish the Irukandji Megaprawn DTF

Tie One On: How to Fish the Irukandji Megaprawn DTF

LION Digital |

It's an hour before first light, the tide's dropping hard past a snag line, and something solid just cut your prawn imitation clean in half. Sound familiar? It's exactly the problem the Megaprawn DTF was built to solve.

Fishing Superstore has just added the Irukandji Tackle range to the shelves, and the Megaprawn DTF sits at the heart of it: a hyper-realistic, pre-rigged prawn imitation designed and tested in the Northern Territory to survive exactly the kind of fish that chew through lesser lures. Barramundi, mangrove jack, flathead and Murray cod all have a reputation for wrecking gear, and that's exactly who this one was built for.

Here's why you want a prawn imitation in the tackle box, what makes this one tough enough to survive the fight, and how to fish it for the best results.

Why Fish with a Prawn Imitation

There's a reason almost every seasoned estuary angler keeps a prawn imitation within reach: prawns are close to a universal food source in Australian estuaries. Bream, flathead, whiting, mulloway, mangrove jack, barramundi and threadfin salmon will all key in on them at different stages of the tide, so if you're only carrying one style of lure, this is a solid one to have in the mix.

It also doesn't need much built-in action to work. Prawns don't swim like baitfish, they sit on the bottom, crawl slowly, then flick backwards in short, sharp bursts when they sense danger. That's exactly why the Megaprawn DTF is built as a realistic, pre-rigged profile instead of relying on wobble or paddle to get you a bite.

Built to Survive the Strike

Ask anyone who's had a soft plastic tail bitten clean off mid-retrieve how fast that ruins a good session. You're not alone there, and the Megaprawn DTF isn't a first attempt at fixing it. It's built on two lures that had already earned their stripes on Australian water, the hyper-realistic Megaprawn and the pre-rigged Sicario DTF, brought together into one lure that comes out of the packet ready to fish.

It's pre-rigged on Irukandji's own Iron Claw 5/0 jighead, backed by a razor-sharp Decoy Y-S81 treble stinger on Decoy split rings and integral NT swivels, so there's no rigging required beyond tying on a leader. The body's moulded from Irukandji's "Immortal" TPE compound, and the tail carries a kevlar reinforcing strip running its length, built to stop the tail being bitten or torn off during repeated strikes. At 42 grams and $24.50 a lure, you're paying for something that keeps working through fish after fish rather than needing to be replaced after the first one. Just keep it away from PVC-based lures in the tackle box, the two materials react.

Where and When to Fish It

The best prawn fishing happens while most people are asleep, so if you like a lie-in, this might take some convincing. The biggest "prawn runs" hit on dark nights, especially in the week either side of a new moon, when prawns leave the mud and ride the outgoing tide toward the ocean under cover of darkness. Fish the run-out tide after dark in that window and you're often within casting range of fish feeding hard.

Location matters just as much as timing. As the tide drops, predators sit on the edges of channels or at the mouths of drains and feeder creeks, waiting for the current to sweep prawns past them. Snag lines, tidal current lines where a side creek meets the main system, and mangrove edges are all worth a cast. Get the timing and the location right, and you're often in with a shot at the biggest fish in the system.

How to Work the Megaprawn DTF

Because a real prawn doesn't swim like a baitfish, your retrieve shouldn't either. Let it sink fully to the bottom on a semi-slack line, then give the rod tip a sharp upward rip to imitate a prawn flicking away from danger, followed by a long pause on the fall. Most strikes come on that fall, often on a slack line, so a fast-action rod with a sensitive tip is the difference between feeling the bite and missing it altogether.

Keep the lure close to the bottom and vary how often you rip it: shorter, more frequent hops around structure and in shallow water, longer pauses in deeper channels. Stay switched on through the pause, the take's often just a faint knock through slack braid before the rod loads up properly.

A light spin outfit spooled with 10 to 15lb braid and a leader in the 20 to 30lb range covers most estuary work with this lure, and it's worth stepping the leader up if there's a good chance of running into mangrove jack or barra around the structure. You want enough softness in the rod to feel that knock on the fall, and enough backbone left to turn a solid fish before it finds a snag.

Matching the Colour to the Conditions

The Megaprawn DTF 140mm comes in six colours: Blood n Bone, Camo, Frost, Reaper, Shock and Stealth. Rather than picking one at random, here's how they group by the conditions they suit best, worth grabbing a couple of each if you can.

Carry one from each group and you've got the conditions covered, whatever the tide throws at you.

Quick version: Fish the run-out tide within a week of the new moon, keep the retrieve close to the bottom with a sharp rip and a long pause, and start with a natural colour before switching to Reaper or Shock if the bite's slow.

Ready to Tie One On

There's no point carrying a prawn imitation that can't survive the fish it's designed to catch. The Megaprawn DTF 140mm is built for that fight, pre-rigged and ready to go straight from the packet, and it's in stock now as part of the Irukandji Tackle range at Fishing Superstore. No lure guarantees a fish, but stacking the tide, the spot and the retrieve in your favour gives you the best shot at finding out. Grab a couple of colours before the next run-out tide, put one to work, and let us know how you get on.

Tight lines.
